A sardonic white hotel owner watches Haiti sink into barbarism with growing fatalism. Complications include a friendship with a rebel leader, politically "charged" hotel guests, an affair with the wife of a European ambassador, and the manipulations of a conniving British arms dealer.

Creepy but absolutely true submitted by pkooger on September 19, 2011, 11:52am Graham Greene's novel about Haiti under the regime of Papa Doc Duvalier is faithfully recreated in this film. You can almost feel the Tontons Macoute watching you through their black glasses. Cemeteries and dead bodies are a recurring theme, but it's the bodies that you don't see which give this film the sense of pervasive violence. The real struggle here is the choice whether to attempt to escape or to fight back. Both choices could lead to death, and for many of the characters they do. This is a long film, and much time is devoted to the affair between the characters of Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton, but the level of tension stays high throughout the film.
