A very Irish book submitted by wampishing on June 24, 2013, 1:34pm Afraid the big people will suck up all of Ireland's luck for themselves, the leprechaun king decrees that all the luck must me gathered up and magically sealed away. Hard times fall on ireland, as there's no luck to be had anywhere. Clever Fiona knows the leprechauns are to blame for her nation's downturn, so she sets about using her wits to trick the king into returning the luck to the land. Ireland needs it's luck but Fiona manages just fine with her mind alone. Building suspense as Fiona conducts her carefully concocted plan, the book's folktale-style narrative ends with a smart, elegantly simple solution. The book's character design, particular the faces, hearken to the style of many animated movies, particularly calling to mind the equally Irish film "The Secret of Kells." The deep, rich palette, subtly colored shadows, however, separate it from the simple, slick look of cel animation. Further differentiating it from other art styles, appears to have dragged lines through paint to create a fine, even texture. Though perhaps a bit wordy for a picture book, the combination of unique, well crafted artwork and a clever heroine makes this a highly recommended addition to any collection.
