Zippadeezoo submitted by Caser on July 6, 2011, 4:36pm Katie Kazoo's big switcheroo in Open Wide pits her as a dentist with a scared patient. The clunky story begins with Emma telling Katie all about the horrors of her recent cavity filling, such as the drill, giant needles, and silver teeth. Starting the book with this exegesis is flatly didactic and duller than a rusty faucet.

The story picks up at school, where a bratty friend of Katie's is showing off how to walk like a model while the boys ridicule her intelligence and mock her physical actions. Katie is glad when the boys go back to playing football because she would like it if "everyone would get along." Too bad though, there is more bickering when a football boy hurts his ankle and has to go to the hospital.

Fear, bullying, and questionable self-image are laced in this chapter book at times overtly and at other times in the subtext of the story and characters. Maybe there's something entirely redeeming in here somewhere, but I frankly missed it.
