illusionist 2006

Interesting (but a bit confusing) story

Grows On You

The Prestige is one of my favorite movies, and for me The Illusionist did not compare favorably with Nolan's film centered around stage magic. The Illusionist has a simpler, more romantic story, and while there are good performances and production quality, there is just a lack of energy and chemistry. The setting, with Prince Leopold and surrounding tension, is rather interesting in and of itself, however, and overall it is a decent costume drama. But it did lack weight and relied too much on romance over solid storytelling for my taste.

Very good

I love this movie. It is well-directed, interesting, and the acting is very good. Edward Norton is spellbinding and more than a little creepy. Adult themes.
