"Blade of Fortriu" is the second in the series about the Pict King Bridei, an actual historical figure in ancient Scotland. Historians know very little about the king, so the author fills in with a fairy wife, and the king's Irish bodyguard, Faolon. Many of the king's subjects do not trust Faolon as the Irish have been invading the Pict's lands and converting people to Christianity. Bridei was trained as a Druid and wants his subjects to keep the Old Religion.
In this novel, Faolan escort the aristrocrat Ana to the north for a strategic marriage, but the intended groom turns out to be violent. Like other novels by Marillier, this book contains a great deal of violence, in particular against women, so parts of it are very disturbing.
