A Labor of Love

Content Warning: This book includes racist depictions of Indigenous Americans and Africans.
This book takes the tiny hints about Scrooge McDuck’s history sprinkled throughout Carl Barks’s Duck comics and weaves them into a plausible narrative that follows the world’s richest duck from his humble beginnings in Scotland to his iconic Duckburg vault. Each individual arc stands well on its own, illuminating an aspect of Scrooge's character, and together they paint a fairly complete portrait of his transformation from a hard-working young duck to a miserable, lonely multi-billionaire. Rosa includes plenty of nods to Scrooge's future as well, particularly with cameos by the Beagle Boys, Donald Duck's parents, and other characters who are intertwined with Scrooge's later life. I did feel that Rosa was a bit clumsy at times with Scrooge's emotional development, expecting readers to make assumptions without actually showing relevant evidence; consequently, the tone could be a bit uneven within and across storylines, but by and large the stories were at least entertaining. Sadly, the entire project is marred by segments that include appalling depictions of people of color, making it difficult to read and enjoy. The book is clearly a labor of love but, ultimately, its time may have passed.
