COMMUNITY REVIEWS
Faithful and frustrating
submitted by larkspur on May 26, 2007, 6:24pm
_The Age of Innnocence_ is surprisingly faithful to its source novel. In this particular case, that may be a bad thing. Books are potentially far more intimate than films, putting you in many cases inside the heads of multiple characters. Although sympathy with characters on screen may be easier, as the size and color and sound overwhelm the senses, empathy is the rule in a good book. _The Age of Innocence_ as a novel breaks that mold: Wharton wrote about a society that she already considered obsolete, a mere few decades later. The modern reader struggles to understand a morality that is already depicted as far removed from one's own.
The film copies that distance, and distance grows with the shift in medium. The effect is that it's simply difficult to know why the characters act as they do. Caring is not the problem, but one is always left wondering, and the conclusion is only partially satisfying (as it was meant). All in all, an experience frustrating, a bit like the character's life.
