Great book submitted by Ilyjtwya on June 28, 2011, 9:11am The title of this book drew me in, and I was glad to have read it. Although some people claim that it is not possible for there to be errors in any translation of the Bible this book discusses the study of different manuscripts and the different texts they contain. The author formerly believed that the bible was infallible but now studies the versions academically. I had previously heard about the mistranslation of the statement that it is easier for a camel to pass through the head of a needle than for a rich man to enter heaven (the words for camel and a thick kind of yarn were very similar) so I was eager to learn about other possible differences. I found this book to be very informative.
Historical and fascinating

Biblical scholar Ehrman gives readers background on how early scribes copied and translated the Bible from Hebrew and Greek into Latin, then English, and all the mistakes that occur in the process. He also talks about how conflicts within the early Christian church shaped which writings made it into the canon and how early disagreements among Christians shaped the theology in which many Christians today believe. For example, the scribes inserted the concept of the Trinity into the writing that became Scripture, it was not in the most original documents. The church's early sexism, anti-Pagan and anti-Jewish biases also crept into the Bible and were most likely not in the first written accounts of Jesus' life and Paul's writing.
Ehrman does repeat himself a great deal. Those who have read his other books will already know the material in the first chapter. The conclusion paragraphs of each chapter are really just a repeat of the arguments he already made and bring no further insight. However, it is well worth reading this book if one likes to learn about how our modern world is shaped.
