Narrated by the author.
Jeannette Walls tells the story about her childhood. She talks about living like nomads, moving among Southwest desert towns, camping in the mountains. Retreating to the dismal West Virginia mining town--and the family-- her father, Rex Walls, had done everything he could to escape. He drank. He stole the grocery money and disappeared for days. As the dysfunction of the family escalated, Jeannette and her brother and sisters had to fend for themselves, supporting one another as they weathered their parents' betrayals and, finally, found the resources and will to leave home.

nice story submitted by Ele Z. on July 29, 2011, 7:44pm nice

powerful submitted by klsyking on August 3, 2011, 10:16am This book was a powerful story about how much an effect our families have on our lives. Definitely worth reading, though very sad at times.

unbelievable experiences! submitted by Kimberlyrol on August 18, 2014, 9:59am This book covers the experiences of a family of 6 as they live in a very unconventional manner in various locations throughout the US. The author describes issues that she confronted within her family such as alcoholism, abuse, homelessness and poverty, racism, adultery, bullying, animal cruelty, child sexual abuse, neglect, and fraud (to name a few) in a nonjudgmental manner. Despite the difficult issues covered, this was a very absorbing read, and it was interesting to follow the family members as they changed throughout the years.

Family Legacy submitted by Judeyblu on August 21, 2015, 7:25am Unflinching look at family.
Looking back on the struggles of poverty, abuse, mental illness that shaped her family, Jeannette shares with us freely.
So well written, we shiver with her and feel the pride and confusion right along with her.
We know she makes it- we are privileged to watch her grow as she leaves that life behind and takes the lessons with her.

Thought Provoking submitted by kbcmmom on August 13, 2020, 8:31am It appears these stories are backed by the author's family. Comparing this memoir to that of Tara Westover, Educated brings some interesting themes about expectations, education, and exploration.
