Julie Andrews is perfection as obscure European royalty and the combination is really quite charming.

Anne Hathaway plays a fish out of water American girl who is brought back to her native country by her prim and proper grandmother. Julie Andrews makes a believable queen. This is first and foremost a comedy, which a small side romance. The real heart of the story is the relationship between a granddaughter and grandmother trying to get to know each other. I really liked this film.

There are many touching moments, when Mia truly finds herself and works through various issues. There's funny moments as well. Although the movie deviates a bit from the books, both are worth a try!

Anne Hathaway and Julie Andrews are brilliantly cast, making a delightfully (mis-)matched odd couple whose conflict and gradual path to mutual understanding provides the film’s emotional core and much of its humorous tension. The film’s emphasis on physical beauty standards is disappointing and detracts somewhat from its core message, but the story itself holds up well. With an excellent balance of humor and heart, and a glorious soundtrack to boot, the film offers a timeless and charming tale of self-discovery.
