When he's 30, Buddy learns from Santa that he's really a human. He decides to go in search of his father, to find out where he belongs. He walks to Manhattan, and is immediately run over by a cab. His father at first rejects him and Buddy ends up in a department store where other elves are working. But all the while, things are looking bad for Santa Claus. When Santa crashes his sleigh in Central Park, it's Buddy's moment to shine.

FUNNY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! submitted by nfrassrand on June 24, 2011, 6:05pm A Ridiculously funny film with a fun twist on christmas. A must-watch movie.

happy sugar christmas times submitted by manz on July 6, 2011, 4:17pm I love this movie! A Christmas can't go by without me watching it. Will Ferrell is hilarious as overgrown Buddy the elf. His awe upon landing in NYC and lapping up every minutes is funny and priceless. Best cup of coffee. The mailroom scene. How he decorates everywhere he goes with SO MUCH XMAS. It's not just about silliness, syrup, Santa, and sleigh bells, there's a moral here. It's about believing!

Be ready to laugh submitted by cathiek on July 12, 2011, 10:18am Really funny, especially if you've visited or lived in New York City. Don't miss this one if you like funny and wonderfully silly movies!

loved it submitted by ColeenT on July 13, 2011, 5:02pm loved it

Just Dumb submitted by honordenver on July 14, 2011, 9:38pm This movie is just dumb that's all it is just dumb.

The Best! submitted by Sonia on July 17, 2011, 10:06pm My favorite christmas movie ever. Will Ferrell is excellent as a human raised as an elf that has never left the north pole. Its a feel good movie that can be enjoyed by the entire family.

so funny submitted by LuckyDuck on August 7, 2011, 7:36pm Loved it!

hillarious submitted by jszchen on August 25, 2011, 4:30pm I am not a Will Ferrell fan, but I loved this movie.

Seriously funny submitted by andreahubert on June 26, 2012, 12:08am Watching Will Ferrell zoom around as Buddy is hilarious. His cheer is just infectious as a character that people really don't take seriously.

hahahahaha submitted by mwallagm on July 13, 2012, 4:53pm Very silly
This is about a human (Buddy) who was adopted by an elf and grew up in the north pole.
It is a journey of how Buddy finds his real dad and his dads new family, and how together they save christmas.

Elf submitted by SBNB on July 23, 2012, 10:23pm This movie was moderately entertaining and also moderately annoying. I saw it once and have no desire to see it again.

Great! submitted by alumeng.ajl on August 5, 2012, 7:28pm This is a really funny movie! It's for young and old alike, and it's a great movie to get you into the holiday spirit.

Smiling is my favorite submitted by crazypockets on July 21, 2013, 2:02pm This movie will definitely make you smile. It's become a Christmas classic around our house. It has some great lines and will make you really excited for the holidays. And it'll make you want sugar. Lots and lots of sugar....

Great holiday movie submitted by wendylv on July 12, 2015, 12:52pm This is a lovely movie to have on your must-watch-for-the-holiday list.

Must watch submitted by Bethybeth07 on June 27, 2017, 6:29pm Best. Christmas. Movie. Ever.

New Holiday Classic submitted by Meginator on August 8, 2017, 11:25am Elf is a relatively new entry into the classic Christmas cinema canon and its place is well-deserved, so long as you appreciate Will Ferrell's over-excitable brand of comedy. Ferrell is excellent as Buddy, an elf exiled from the North Pole, and the jokes are genuinely funny even if they lean heavily on existing fish out of water tropes. The film has a good mix of over the top silliness and a classic feel-good plot, and the result is a great, lighthearted holiday experience.

Buddy the Elf submitted by meghantpowell on August 31, 2018, 11:09pm Will Ferrell was perfect for this role. Absolutely love this Christmas movie!

not half as funny submitted by mellonir on January 16, 2019, 11:58am People are always praising this movie as being hilarious. It isn't half as funny as folks make it out to be. I didn't laugh once. It was a waste of Bob Newhart.

Awesome submitted by Rumshaker13 on June 26, 2019, 12:23am The best Christmas movie ever, so funny, love it!

a new-ish Christmas classic submitted by lisa on July 18, 2019, 4:20pm Deadpan innocent Elf is rockin'.

wonderful submitted by kevinhe on July 29, 2019, 10:52am still remember the hilarious festival greeting based on elf.

Buddy is the Best submitted by kencza on August 5, 2019, 1:45am My favorite "new" holiday classic. Will Ferrell is at his best as Buddy the elf trying to connect with his father(James Caan).
His eating and drinking habits are abominable and his cheery attitude is over the top but somehow there is just enough sentiment and smart humor to elevate the story beyond shlock. Zoey Deschanel is very good as his co-worker and love interest, and Bob Newhart is the perfect papa elf. I watch this every year like clockwork!

dumb but funny submitted by FordAlpha on August 17, 2019, 11:16am This movie doesn't really have any great ideas. It's not clever or sophisticated, and the acting is definitely not subtle. But the sentiment is genuine enough and the humor is family friendly (with just a few wink-wink jokes for the grownups), which makes it fun to watch as a family holiday tradition, if you're into that sort of thing.

one of the best cristmas movies submitted by Sara Taylor Eggleston on June 29, 2020, 11:19am one of the best cristmas movies also if you like this movie try crismas with the kranks

Hilarious submitted by msarah on June 26, 2021, 4:32pm This movie really cracked me up!

Elf DVD submitted by a2sue on August 1, 2022, 12:51am The Elf DVD was a ludicrous movie, but fun!

Not my cup of tea submitted by journeyhawthorne on August 7, 2022, 11:31am Maybe I'm just a Scrooge, but I don't get Elf's appeal. Will Ferrell has to be one of my least favorite comedians and actors in general, and the "comedy" is intensely centered around cringe humor, which only works in small doses. I love plenty of holiday movies, and I know not everything was made for me, but I seriously don't get its broad appeal.

Oh well. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ I'm glad it brings joy to folks, even if it doesn't do it for me.

holiday classic submitted by zaraz on August 10, 2022, 5:19pm one of my favorite movies to watch during the holidays! it never gets old for me.

Funny Movie submitted by Helengio on June 17, 2023, 10:48pm This movie makes me laugh. I like the snowball fight the best. I am seven years old.

Lighthearted submitted by keldan315 on July 15, 2023, 2:40pm I was ambivalent at first about this movie, but it's become a bit of a Christmas tradition. It is lighthearted and silly, and entertaining for all ages

A holiday regular submitted by jrpolaczyk on July 22, 2023, 8:09am In our house. It’s so funny and really gets you in the holiday spirit. We never go a year without seeing it!

Best Christmas Movie submitted by Mandyghutton on August 22, 2023, 3:02pm It is a tradition in my family to watch this movie every year. We love it! We even talk about eating spaghetti with maple syrup and chocolate sauce. It gets everyone in the Christmas spirit. So many great quotes that we use year-round.
"You sit on a throne of lies!"
"If you see gum on the street, leave it there. It isn't free candy."
"Cotton headed ninny-muggins"

I Had To Watch ELF When I Was In Middle School It's Not Good For Me Because 2 Of The Actors Died This Year submitted by Shaylane Webb on October 25, 2023, 8:32pm I Had To Watch ELF When I Was In Middle School It's Not Good For Me Because 2 Of The Actors Died This Year

Meh... recommended by the WSJ but no big deal, really, and at the end rather lame. submitted by Tassos on December 24, 2023, 7:01am What do you expect from most holiday movies, especially one where the former SNL clown Will Ferell of the low-brow, dumbed-down humor stars?
