This book takes place in a small village in Turkey during the 1920's at the end of the Ottoman empire. There are a number of plots involving people from this small village that are beautifully developed in each short chapter.
The characters are Christians and Moslems who are friends and neighbors. We follow families during peaceful times as well as during wars.
The author is poetic in his descriptions of scenes and events so that I envisioned events in the book as if it were a video.
His descriptions of battles is vivid.
Birds Without Wings submitted by leighsprauer on August 5, 2013, 9:02am This book should be depressing, since it is the story of Ottoman villagers, many of whom suffer horrible fates during Turkey's wars for independence. But the writing is so wonderful, descriptive, and inspired that it is a joy to read. Definitely looking forward to reading more from this author!
