Side Stitches submitted by Caser on August 3, 2010, 11:31am Listening to David Sedaris read his own work gives me side stitches. The droll delivery, the deadpan self-effacing commentary, it all works for the laugh. Even when the stories are a bit of a letdown, listening to him tell it really helps.

The scene where he and his mother are trying to emulate a wealthy woman's supermarket remark, "My house, well, one of my houses" was delivered impeccably, with Sedaris doing the iterations of his mother, himself, and the woman so convincingly I almost didn't realize how difficult that must've been to pull off well. Next up, "When You Are Engulfed in Flames" on audio.

very good stuff submitted by ferdoble on August 2, 2011, 4:19pm I don't think that you can do better where comedic writing is concerned. Dave Barry is pretty close if not equal, but its different. And there is no way to touch an comedian that reads his own stuff, so you get all the funny that's there.

My favorite submitted by pmysore on August 18, 2011, 4:44pm This was my first and so far favorite book by the author! Also, one of the books i just could not put down and managed to finish in record time!

Social commentary through humor submitted by Jen Chapin-Smith on August 28, 2012, 11:45am David Sedaris' stories about his life are simultaneously hilarious and sad. The openly gay author grew up with the racist, sexist and homophobic of 1960s North Carolina, and he criticizes those prejudices with a disarming humor.
Now an openly gay man living in Paris with his husband, Sedaris also contributes to NPR's "This American Life."
His sister Amy Sedaris also has a book, TV show and movie ("Strangers with Candy," co-starring Stephen Colbert) at the AADL.

A must read! submitted by mickplu on July 22, 2017, 3:31pm Anything written by David Sedaris is hilarious and this is even better as he reads his work aloud.

Brilliant submitted by mmckenzie on August 26, 2017, 11:08am His writing is so different, so individual and special. He reads it brilliantly and with such feeling. Amazing.

so funny! submitted by KOH on August 30, 2017, 9:26pm I can't get enough Sedaris.

Great For A Roadtrip submitted by paper girl on June 29, 2019, 11:01pm I listened to this book with my father while spending a straight week driving home after a road-trip. It is endlessly engaging, funny, thoughtful, and brutally honest. It isn't easy to get my father to laugh, but this had him in stitches on several occasions. If I were to recommend anything for a long car trip, it would be this.

More than humor submitted by calinescus on August 2, 2019, 4:12pm Sedaris has a confidence and a knack for observation that really takes his hilarious writing to the next level. It's not just funny, but it makes you want to take account of your own life. In a way, I find him inspirational. Which is pretty wild, because he is entertaining first and foremost. Put some Sedaris in your life!
