Something intriguing about the three lead actors submitted by ccrose on August 31, 2019, 3:12pm Sean Penn plays a coiled rageful man really well. Maybe it’s his trademark. So watching him go through the heart transplant and come out on the other side, sans wife, I knew he was still going to have an opportunity to use his snarl again. Naomi Watts impressed me the most. Her losses were too big to live through. A script detail that rang true for me was her massive breakdown that she didn’t change her little girl’s shoelaces before the child died. Grief is not always quiet sobbing. Hers was fueled by the hit and run driver who of course becomes the target of Penn’s rage he’d been saving.The three way fight to the death in the tiny grim motel room seems to maximize each actor’s skill at showing intensity. There were scenes that seemed unnecessary except to lengthen the story. Penn’s Wife for example was played poorly; Penn’s Dinner party w colleagues didn’t ring true either. The scene which was well done and added to the complicated life of Del Toro was the surprise party in which his wife kitchen-talks with another wife of a man in recovery. They know how tenuous every day can be.and how terrifying when the bottom drops out without warning.
