Fascinating tale of power and conscience

I picked this book up at the AADL for no reason other than the title grabbed my attention and the description on its jacket intrigued me, but I am so glad I did.

One day a white man shows up at the door of a black man on the premise that he heard the basement of the home in his family for generations is large, and he needs a large basement for a couple of months. Wary, but in need of the income, Charles agrees to allow this man to stay, but the circumstances do not become clear for quite some time. It is a leap of faith based largely on necessity, and that in and of itself becomes part of the plot. It is a tale of two men with extremely different backgrounds, sense of morality, and resultant power and wealth.

The story is revealed slowly over the course of the book, and I do not wish to spoil it, so I will leave it at that. It is an easy read, although not an easy subject, and while it will leave you thinking about very important and difficult ideas, it does not preach. I would highly recommend this book, especially to anyone asking questions about their station in life, and whether people really do get their just desserts.
