my beloved diskworld submitted by ferdoble on August 11, 2011, 3:54pm To describe Terry Pratchett’s books is a difficult thing to do. The disc world series is in a word fantastic. Terry Pratchett, would seem to use the disk world, to take any theme, or know story and then twist it in his own very humorous way. These are not always laugh out loud funny (sometimes they are), bur rather the sort of funny that just sort of lifts your spirits a little bit.

I will say that in some cases there isn’t always a really strong story, sometimes its just his characters moving through one of those twisted themes. I like them all, you may want to start with the Most Von Lipwig story line (“Going Postal” and then “making money”) as at least the first one has a really great story line.

I love to pepper my reading queue with these books to keep all those books that take themselves seriously fresh and interesting.

I recommend reading them ALL.

OR listening to them. The two main narrators of Terry Pratchett’s books are Stephen Briggs & Nigel Planer and they take Terry Pratchett’s phenomenal writing to a whole new level.

Pratchett tackles sexism. submitted by eknapp on November 9, 2011, 3:59pm Solid Pratchett. In this entry to the Discworld anthology, Pratchett has a lot of fun with sexism and gender sterotypes. He also takes a few shots at the stupidity and wastefulness of war, but he somehow pulls it off without being dismissive of the complexity of war's causes and without oversimplifying the alternatives.

Soldiers in drag submitted by Jen Chapin-Smith on August 17, 2012, 12:21pm This was the first Discworld book I read and it got me hooked all the whole series (there are now 39 Discworld novels). The book is about an unending war in a very backwards, sexist country. Our main character's brother, who may have a cognitive disability, was drafted into the army and his family has not heard from him for months. So, his sister disguises herself as a young man and joins the army to look for him.

Like other Terry Pratchett novels, this one tackles sexism and classism.

Warning to parents: This book acknowledges the existence of sex, including outside of marriage. There are some prostitutes in one scene.

Ladies kicking butt submitted by audreyh on June 15, 2015, 3:14pm I love this book. It's one of my favorites by Pratchett (which seems to be something I say about every single book), but this one really stands out. I think it's Pratchett's best work on the topic of sexism, and it showcases how his thinking has evolved from when he first started writing the Discworld series. Even if you're not in it for the feminism, this is is still a good book that's well worth the read. There are awesome ladies all over this book, which is always a fun change.
