Autism in Britain
submitted by Jen Chapin-Smith on July 30, 2013, 4:00pm
"The curious incident of the dog in the night-time" is a mystery in which 15-year-old Christopher, who has autism and lives in Britain, solves the murder of his neighbor's dog. Because it involves a dog's death, the book is rather disturbing and may not be suitable for those who love dogs and would be upset by someone killing one.
Author Mark Haddon wrote on his blog in 2009 that "curious incident is not a book about Asperger’s....if anything it’s a novel about difference, about being an outsider, about seeing the world in a surprising and revealing way. The book is not specifically about any specific disorder." (Quote via Wikipedia).
While Haddon know some people who have autism, he himself does not, and so readers should take the portrayal with a grain of salt. The book won numerous awards, including the "Guardian" Children's Fiction Prize.
I really enjoyed the book and recommend it to others. Even with the above caveats, I feel that it better helped me understand people with autism spectrum disorder.
