Autism Fiction submitted by PBS on June 20, 2011, 8:54am This book begins as a detective novel from the point of view of an autistic child, but turns into something else quite different by the end. Haddon does an excellent job of putting the reader in the mind of something with autism. Haddon also uses the book to talk about family relationships, parenthood, and marriage through a different lens than the normal fare. The pacing of the book is also excellent.
Intriguing and Delightful submitted by eringogreen on June 29, 2011, 12:24pm You won't just learn about autism, you'll learn about life. It's a delightful read, I'd recommend it to anyone.
Autism

"The curious incident of the dog in the night-time" is a mystery in which 15-year-old Christopher, who has autism, solves the murder of his neighbor's dog. Author Mark Haddon wrote on his blog in 2009 that "curious incident is not a book about Asperger’s....if anything it’s a novel about difference, about being an outsider, about seeing the world in a surprising and revealing way. The book is not specifically about any specific disorder." (Quote via Wikipedia).
While Haddon know some people who have autism, he himself does not, and so readers should take the portrayal with a grain of salt. The book won numerous awards, including the "Guardian" Children's Fiction Prize.
I really enjoyed the book and recommend it to others. Even with the above caveats, I feel that it better helped me understand people with autism spectrum disorder.
Emotional submitted by nirmala on June 17, 2016, 9:51am Touching, a must-read!
Eye-Opening submitted by Meginator on August 8, 2017, 5:51pm I cannot speak for the accuracy of Haddon's depiction of autism, and this isn't an own voices work, but the use of a narrator on the spectrum seems to be done in a way that engenders the reader's empathy. The story is nicely complex and evolves at a good pace, and the book seems very nicely polished all around. A lot of themes lurk beneath the surface and what appears to be a relatively simple book really isn't.

A Inside View of Asperger's submitted by krathje on July 5, 2020, 8:10am I used this book with high school seniors to examine narration, the murder mystery genre, and to build empathy. Excellently written. Captivating.
4.5/5 submitted by Noight on July 2, 2023, 10:09pm I loved the way the book progressed, but the ending was a bit too abrupt for me
