A Paradigm Shift as Told By Those Who Shifted It submitted by Meginator on August 31, 2019, 9:50pm I find this documentary irresistibly compelling in its ability to so completely conjure the unique historical moment that led to the development of skateboarding as we know it today. Director Stacy Peralta’s credentials are unimpeachable, as he was an original member of the Zephyr team, and his interviews with the primary players are remarkably candid and revealing. Peralta does an excellent job of setting the scene and describing why the Zephyr skaters’ innovations were so radically different than previous skateboard maneuvers, with plenty of well-chosen archival footage showcasing their incredible skill. And he does this without losing sight of the human stories behind the innovation, getting to the heart of the movement and linking the Z-Boys with modern skaters. This is an excellent example of documentary filmmaking, drawing on lived experiences to get to the heart of a popular phenomenon, and is required viewing for anyone with even a fleeting interest in skating.
