COMMUNITY REVIEWS

Mostly of scholarly interest submitted by acm on December 18, 2022, 4:29am The insert with the CD says that many of these are fragments rather than complete pieces and that they weren't edited. There aren't better quality versions in the depths of the Smithsonian, at least not as far as the Smithsonian knows. There's a lot of static and burble from the slowly degrading recording materials (tapes just don't last that long) and probably from the poor quality of the recording equipment; it's worse than on any other Folkways album I've tried. I'm not clear as to if the fragments are all that could still be played from the originals or if they're all that was recorded.

Listening to it is a lot like trying to decipher one of those partially reconstructed papyrus scrolls, the ones made of fragments with lots of gaps. I don't have the knowledge/context to understand what I'm hearing. I hope the recordings have reached the families of those whose performances are recorded here.
