COMMUNITY REVIEWS

sense & sensibility submitted by a2sue on August 5, 2013, 8:13am i really enjoyed this film. emma thompson, hugh grant, kate winslet, and alan rickman are superb in their roles. and it was nice to see "house", aka hugh laurie, in the film too.

Sense and Sensibility submitted by SBNB on July 28, 2014, 9:35pm It's a good adaptation of the book. The story itself isn't my favorite of Austen's.

The BEST.... submitted by Kikumatsu97 on July 29, 2015, 9:26am I've watched this movie a great many times, and I never tire of it. It' s the BEST adaptation of Jane Austen's book, and certainly the most star studded. The scenery is amazing and it's got quite a few actors in the cast that are also found in the Harry Potter films, (Emma Thompson, Alan Rickman, Robert Hardy, Imelda Staunton) It's quite interesting to see. The flow of this movie is in Ang Lee style, it's so smooth and natural and keeps interesting throughout the film. It's dramatic and humorous and Emma Thompson delivers a fantastic Eleanor, though many feel she was too old to be cast in this role.

Love submitted by majean on August 8, 2018, 8:20pm I watch this movie over and over...

Entertaining, but kinda forgettable. submitted by lisa on July 18, 2019, 4:09pm At least to me. I admit the cast is great stuff. Still, to me it's an "also ran".

Well done submitted by crp on August 10, 2019, 6:59am Acting is superb in this.

A faithful rendering of the novel submitted by kkjammers on August 1, 2020, 6:02pm The actors' talents are superbly showcased in this film. I love Kate Winslet's impudence as Marianne, and Alan Rickman's resonant voice and carriage as Colonel Brandon. Of course, Alan Rickman anywhere is pretty great. Hugh Grant does well as as an unsure Edward Ferrars, but stumbles and hesitates enough to mildly irritate, though that seems to be one of his hallmarks. Mrs. Jennings is brazenly hilarious. The reality of women's unfortunate and undeserving status in Regency England is on full display in this story. I recommend this film for anyone who wishes to be immersed elsewhere for a short time.

Solid adaptation, but I like the BBC Masterpiece version better submitted by tkuz5 on June 22, 2021, 8:02pm Solid adaptation, but I like the BBC Masterpiece version better

Alan. Rickman. submitted by amandasaurus on June 15, 2022, 11:23pm Enough said.

(This is a truly lovely adaptation, gorgeous scenery, true to the novel, very talented cast).

amazing adaptation! submitted by zaraz on August 2, 2022, 9:19pm this is one of my all-time favorite movies-- Emma Thompson's script is incredible, the cinematography and scenery is gorgeous, and the cast is stellar. just so lovely all around <3

Does the great novel this is based on also have this unconvincing, abrupt, Hollywood style "happy end"? submitted by Tassos on April 21, 2023, 6:08pm While the title screams "chick movie" and I would ordinarily run away from it fast, THIS movie is much better than that.

But the reason is NOT the good actors. The biggest reason is JANE AUSTEN, the author, and a distant but important second reason is ANG LEE the director.

WHat did you expect me to say, Hugh Grant and Kate or Cate Winslet? I am not that silly!

Jane Austen would be very surprised to see how wildly popular she is today, in an environment far different from the one she lived in.

She would be even more surprised and indeed STUNNED to see her face on today's British Currency (!!!!) DId you characters know that?

She's a heavyweight.

But reading the reviews, they praise... the cinematography, or this or that actor, and not even the DIRECTOR who has given us so many other MASTERPIECES

Of course, you understand that even a great director cannot make a movie better than the book it's based on.

So if you enjoyed this movie. you really should read the book.

Where is the humor? submitted by Diananana on July 24, 2023, 11:50pm I've enjoyed watching this adaption numerous times. My complaint is that in condensing the plot to the length of a feature film, many of the humorous parts were cut. I miss Lucy Steele's vulgar sister, Nancy, and the conceited ramblings of Robert Ferrars. In her personal life as well as in her writings, Jane Austen was known for her biting humor. The omissions make the film feel overly melancholy. If you have not yet read the book, do so find out what you're missing.

A fantastic adaptation submitted by Helengio on August 15, 2023, 9:26pm Great cast of charming characters
