dated, but okay submitted by camelsamba on June 30, 2016, 8:22pm I had been listening to lots of books on CD when I noticed this on the shelf while browsing. I recognized the title as a Newbery winner so I decided to fill a gap in my cultural literacy.

I'm wavering between "it was okay" (2 stars) and "I liked it" (3 stars). It was an award winner, after all! But not really my cup of tea. It's definitely dated in many ways - not just because it's depicting the Civil War era but because of language that was apparently still acceptable in the mid 1930s. I can overlook that as a historical artifact, so that's not really what bothered me. Perhaps it was just too mellow for me. I did like Caddie as a character though, especially when she was showing her compassionate side (for the "half breed" boys whose names have slipped my mind, for her younger sister, for John's tribe, etc.).

At the end of the recording, the Recorded Books guy (not the reader) states that the more recent edition has a foreword that mentions the connection between Caddie and the author's grandmother - so why didn't they include that in the recording?? That was frustrating!
