"Rumpelstiltskin" in beautiful new clothes submitted by FordAlpha on July 6, 2018, 11:28pm Written with lilting West Indian dialect that I enjoyed reading aloud--but that confused my young kids--this retelling of "Rumpelstiltskin" turns the strange little man into an eerie, frightening creature who creates not just spools of gold thread, but bolts of multi-hued, richly patterned golden cloth. Though the illustrations are beautiful, they are busy, and my kids seemed to have a hard time scanning the pictures to follow the action. The conclusion of the tale is charming, with the king inadvertently being the one to discover Lit'mahn's name (which he doesn't know the queen is searching for) and apologizing profusely for his earlier greed and cruelty; and the queen, king, and their family living "fairly happily" ever after. Alas, my kids just weren't interested in having this book read to them.
