out of character submitted by ersmith.maps on July 22, 2012, 8:52pm While the first book in this series (Running With the Demon) was so realistic and so well-written, this one seemed really lackluster. I actually stopped and wondered while reading this if it was written by a different person. Part of it is that John Ross has decided he no longer wants to be a Knight of the Word and turns his back on all his responsibilities and that just seemed so far removed from his character. Also, this book is set in Brooks' hometown of Seattle, so you would expect the setting to be more vivid than his other works, but I feel like, since it is a place he is more familiar with, he did less to give it depth and breadth. All that being said, anything by Terry Brooks is still good and you need to read this one in order to get to the third one (Angel Fire East), which is much more like the first book and a great conclusion to the series.
