I remember submitted by jibkidder on June 24, 2022, 10:40pm when pre-Clear Channel stations were desperate to get their hands on the Bongload issued "Loser" single, before this album came out of DGC, because the song was a viral hit before there was such a thing. There's a documentary on youtube on the making of this album, which is pretty helpful for understanding it, because it is easy to fantasize that Beck made it alone in a shed. In reality, it was a major group effort and Carl Stephenson carried a lot of weight, but you can compare it to his Forest for the Trees album to get a sense of how much Beck improved his work. Music is emotional processing and a big part of emotional processing is integration. This record was important to the moment of its birth because of the manner in which it processed trash, the way pollution was integrated into its fabric.
