"A novel of feudal Japan."
In 17th Century Japan, Sano Ichiro, senior police commander, investigates the death of a noblewoman and a peasant who drowned in a river tied to each other. Officials say a love-suicide, but Ichiro says murder and sees a suspect in the royal family--for which he is fired. But he doesn't give up.

Great Mystery, Lush Setting submitted by thomasjrowland on June 11, 2021, 11:51am Rowland paints a vivid portrait of feudal Japan. It's fascinating to see how the social pressures contribute so many additional challenges to the work of a detective. For instance the social taboo on even being in the same room as a corpse, let alone examining one for clues! Sano is often forced to weigh his adherence to these social constructs against his burning desire for truth, to the great interest of the reader!
Historical, thrilling mystery submitted by mcreader on June 10, 2022, 1:17pm Rowland writes a mystery which immerses the reader into Edo period. The character, Sano is one that the reader is rooting for. Very well written and entertaining!
