Good Story, Great Details
submitted by Sara W on June 21, 2011, 9:35am
Man, can that Almanzo eat! I REQUIRE baked goods on hand when I read this book. I also like that the seeds of disliking Eliza Jane are sown so early in this series! This book is full of great details about growing up on a successful farm and the daily chores and challenges the family faces.
I love to see things like Alamanzo helping his mother dip candles, learning to break his calves and his mother selling butter to New York City buyers, etc.
:-) submitted by marisal on June 26, 2011, 1:59pm I really liked this book and loved the part when the pigs mouth is glued shut by carmel.

Good Olden Days submitted by ktscott on June 15, 2015, 10:58am This book is a great story of how things were in the olden days for a little boy named Almanzo. I loved reading about the colts and how school was in the olden days.

My favorite of the Little House books
submitted by willow on August 15, 2015, 6:21am
I am not the biggest fan of the Little House books, but I enjoyed reading Farmer Boy, the story of Almanzo Wilder in New York; he grew up to marry Laura. The book is filled with delicious food and hilarious incidents, and it can be read in sections as it is episodic. Can you imagine your parents leaving you at home for a week while they go on vacation? Really vivid and exciting.
I recommend the full color edition.
Fabulous! submitted by bookworms on August 24, 2016, 12:18pm This book is a great addition to the little house series! It shows you how different Almanzo Wilder's (Laura's Husband) childhood was to Laura's. It tells the tale of Almanozo Wilder growing up and becoming a young man with new responsibilities.
My favorite book submitted by anita.lautenbach on June 25, 2018, 2:43pm These books were amazing and this was in my top 4.
Better Than Expected submitted by jgerman79 on July 26, 2018, 8:14pm Though I love the Little House on the Prairie series, I had no desire to read this book. After 20 year, I finally read it because my 7 year old made me read it to her. It's much better than I expected! Right in line with the first and second of Laura's books!

Another classic submitted by crp on August 9, 2019, 8:21am Please refer to my first book review in series for other thoughts around this series. This book is a good one too, and worth the easy read for kids.
Excellent Classic submitted by TLW1998 on June 23, 2022, 11:16pm One of the best books that I have ever read. Laura has a charming way of writing. She is a great story teller, and her stories really paint a picture of what it was like to live as an early American pioneer. My 5-6 year old daughter and I loved reading the entire Little House series together. The books are very enjoyable and educational too. I highly recommend reading the entire collection. This book focuses Laura's husband, as a boy.
