Powerful submitted by Steph on June 30, 2011, 1:18pm This is one of my favorite books. The story is sad and at the same time inspiring. The characters, though they may do things we find atrocious, are sympathetic. The prose is beautiful and the narrative is through provoking. Some of the content is a bit graphic and may be offensive to some.

Good book submitted by Ilyjtwya on August 25, 2011, 7:15am As with so many books which have been adapted to film, I highly recommend reading the book if you enjoy the movie. Movies can never really capture the thoughts and feelings of characters the way books can.

Highly recommended submitted by Jen Chapin-Smith on August 20, 2012, 10:25am I highly recommend that everyone read "The Color Purple." Alice Walker won the 1983 Pulitzer and National Book Award for Fiction for this novel.
The book does deal with incest and rape as the main character survives both. It also deals with spousal abuse and adultery. As these are real problems in our society and as many teens really do survive physical and sexual abuse I think it is well worth a read, even though readers will (rightfully) find the material disturbing.

A classic! submitted by jessNU on July 24, 2018, 11:27pm This is my favorite book of all time. It has won numerous awards and is worthy of all the praise it has been given. A warning that it deals with difficult content, so may be difficult for some readers.

LOVE submitted by majean on August 9, 2018, 6:49pm I was so engrossed in this book that I read it in one day.
