Fast-paced Read submitted by bookasaurusray on June 19, 2023, 9:06am This is a little bit of everything: dark academia, fantastical, sisterly bonds, and family secrets. I loved it and read it quickly since most chapters end in mini-cliffhangers.

Engaging, stunning read - 4.5/5 submitted by Jess347 on June 29, 2023, 3:51pm I think this book is one of the best magical realism books I've read. (Also, I feel like I've being really enjoying this genre recently, so I may be biased). However, the writing, the themes of family, the character development, the character arcs, the magic system, etc. were all done so well. The way the stories of Nicholas and Esther and Joanna intersected was done beautifully. Honestly, there isn't going to be mind-blowing reveals or super surprising plot twists, but this book flowed in a way that felt heartwarming, (relatively) well-paced, and engaging. This books works REALLY well as a stand-alone book.

Small little nitpicky criticisms for this book include:

Some side characters, including Abe and Cecily, could have been fleshed out just a bit more.
Joanna and Collins romance felt a little rushed.
The beginning parts of the book for Nicholas bored me a little, just because I was so preoccupied with Esther and Joanna's stories. However, the latter half of the book is spectacular.
