Extensive Reference Information submitted by Meginator on June 27, 2023, 10:59am I find it very amusing that these authors are so strongly opinionated about the intricate nature of microhabitats and specific native ranges of native plants and pollinator species, only to omit any useful geographic information beyond “generally good in the Great Lakes and New England regions” from their otherwise extensive reference guide to specific flora and fauna. The front matter comes out swinging, making a fierce (and generally persuasive) argument for supporting native ecological relationships, but it does so in a way that is potentially alienating to gardeners who do enjoy a few non-native species; I’m not even particularly partial to any one species and I felt a little attacked while reading this. However, the information is useful and more specific than in many similar guides, especially when it comes to delineating the differences between types of bees. The reference guide, which makes up the bulk of the book, is extensive and includes excellent details about each plant’s blooming season, ideal growing conditions, and potential height. Anyone who is excited by the prospect of doing heavy research as part of their garden-planning process will find a wealth of information here; even if the front matter is a bit…lively, it did make me reconsider some of my assumptions and has already had an impact on how I will approach my next garden-building efforts.
