The men's cross country program at Ann Arbor High/Ann Arbor Pioneer High has been called the top high school program in the history of men's XC in Michigan. From the first team in 1919 winning the coveted "Silver Cup" at the Detroit YMCA Thanksgiving meet, the school has been home to many team and individual champions. Thousands of young men tested themselves and learned about persistence and pushing past limits, and many went on to great heights athletically and in their personal and professional lives. This book highlights many of these young athletes and teams, as well as the coaches that helped form them into college All Americans and successful adults. Just as importantly, the bonds that grew from hours of miles together have led to lifelong friendships, apparent in these pages. This book takes you year-by-year through more than 100 years of teams and races, with plenty of performance data and and photographs. You will also enjoy the personal reflections of many of the athletes who proudly wore "the Purple and White".
COMMUNITY REVIEWS
Ann Arbor high school harrier history submitted by Dan Bonenberger on August 3, 2023, 11:27am This book provides a nice overview of Ann Arbor (AKA Pioneer) High School's boy's cross country program, its origins, and 100+ year history. It draws upon data and illustrations published in the Omega yearbook and local newspapers, reflections of coaches and people who ran for the team, photographs and ephemera. The book was not the work of a professional historian or academic publisher but rather member of the team during the early 1970s, so it has some obvious limitations, but its year-by-year organization is easy to follow, full of fun facts and memories ,and makes for easy reference. A deeper dive into the story of BIPOC athletes and the girl's cross country team are just waiting to be written.
