COMMUNITY REVIEWS

Somewhat useful research submitted by apf1950 on September 28, 2023, 9:51am The author interviewed students are both historically Black colleges (HBCUs) and predominantly white ones (PWIs). Both the students and colleges are renamed to protect privacy. The research was done during the Trump years before the pandemic and the killing of George Floyd.

The book is often redundant, especially about racism, family history, the Black church, and other topics. The author is frequently polemical. Perhaps most useful are the chapter "Adjusting to College Life" and his observations on the value of student organizations. The references can also be helpful.

I was a bit dismayed when the author cited the famous quote about "good trouble" (p. 206) and attributed it to "Senator John Lewis." Couldn't he or editors have gotten it right that Lewis had a long career in the U.S. House?
