"Jane Start is thirty-three, broke, and recently single. Ten years prior, she had a hit song--written by world-famous superstar Jonesy--but Jane hasn't had a breakout since. Now she's living out of four garbage bags at her parents' house, reduced to performing to Karaoke tracks in Las Vegas. But when her longtime manager Pippa sends Jane to London to regroup, she's seated next to an intriguing stranger on the flight--the other Tom Hardy, an elegantly handsome Oxford professor of literature. Jane is instantly smitten by Tom, and soon, truly inspired. But it's not Jane's past alone that haunts her second chance at stardom, and at love. Is Tom all that he seems? And can Jane emerge from the shadow of Jonesy's earlier hit, and into the light of her own?"-- Provided by publisher.

This Book is a Lot submitted by pjaynes on June 16, 2023, 11:22am There is a lot in this book: it's a comeback story plus a rom-com, plus a Jane-Eyre-inspired mystery, plus a fish-out-of-water tale, plus a personal reckoning of (one-hit) pop-stardom. Some readers won't like that, and I do think the last third of the book was a bit rushed and ended almost too neatly. However, the characters are very charming (think Notting Hill vibes) and at the end, I was just happy that they were happy. Plus, the main character is a HOT MESS, so the fact that the book tries to do too much is kind of reflective of that. Susanna Hoffs' experience in the music industry definitely helps the book, and I wish there was more to the comeback story so that could have been used more.
