Thoughtful, Modern Mystery submitted by Maria Maguire on July 28, 2023, 10:32pm I had previously read and enjoyed "The Borrower" by this author, and was excited to read something else by her. It was interesting how it was told, with the narrator addressing Mr. Bloch from the beginning. I felt like I knew what the answer to the mystery was going to be - only to realize there was going on than I thought.

I also thought the sections where she mentions all the different cases of missing or murdered women made famous by true crime stories were impactful:

"Wasn't it the one where she was stabbed in-no. The one where she got in a cab with-different girl. The one where she went to the frat party, the one where he used a stick, the one where he used a hammer, the one where she picked him up from rehab and he-no."

I recognized the details of some, and wonder if all are based on true stories. The tension between whether podcasters are rightfully helping bring attention and justice to victims, or are just using them for sensational stories, felt relevant - I'm sure we all know someone who is very into true crime stories.

Similar to "The Borrower", it ended with some unresolved plot points and uncertainty. I am curious as I read more from her to see if this is a hallmark of her writing or just a coincidence in the two books I've read.

Overall solid and interesting, makes me want to read more of her stuff!
