Welcome to Commie High explores an experiment in public education - Community High School. The film follows its humanistic, anti-establishment origins in the early 70s through its survival into the 90s, when sudden demand for this alternative, small school led to a phenomenon of lines, camping, and lottery systems. Today, Community High stands as one of the few remaining public schools from America's "free-school" movvement. Filmed over the 2016-2017 school year, we see how the "Commie High" model has evolved and continues to reflect the world around it.

COMMUNITY REVIEWS

Ann Arbor history submitted by Krystal on June 23, 2023, 8:17am Interesting bit of Ann Arbor history. I really enjoyed it

quirky and interesting submitted by bec on June 26, 2023, 11:44am A loving tribute to Community High, made with Kickstarter funds. While it glosses over some more complicated issues and defers largely to nostalgia and appreciation, I appreciated the opportunity to learn more about the history of the school and its current place in the community.

Enjoyable; a little long; only a mention of the most serious negative submitted by Firehawk on November 10, 2023, 5:32pm First, I liked this documentary--a great review of a slice of Ann Arbor history.

The major focus is the view that students and teachers felt Community High was excellent because it had "no rules". Another focus is the exclusiveness and the difficulty to enroll. I thought it went over those topics over and over again. I was ready for the end at about the 60 minute mark.

Also, this documentary glorifies Community High while giving very little time to the negatives resulting from the blurred lines between teachers and students, especially the history of unlawful intimacy. Maybe a minute is devoted to two interviewees discussing the matter briefly and rather generically. I wondered if anyone was held to account for their actions? No mention of that.

Again, I did enjoy this documentary. I recommend this documentary, and I applaud the creators.
