Very Woke submitted by GJBarnett2 on March 13, 2023, 4:06pm Not a general history of the Oscars, rather a history of selected behind-the-scenes (and not so "behind) battles between nominees and would-be's. From a very leftist perspective. The last chapter, ostensibly dealing with "envelopegate", the public and private battle between "La La Land" and "Midnight" culminating in that Historical Gaffe when Warren Beatty was handed the wrong envelope and announced that the Oscar went to the former rather than the latter, is so overtly woke that Donald Trump appears on 12 pages, usually gratuitously and invariably in a negative context. And why not, after all? This point of view merely acknowledges that the Oscars have always involved under-currents and politics and that the current themes are racial and gender identity. So if that's your cup of tea, as it is clearly the author's, you've come to the right place. Drink deep!
