COMMUNITY REVIEWS

Guess we don't agree with the Oscar nominations submitted by rickmktg on March 27, 2023, 1:57pm First 1/2 hr is insufferable. Movie as a whole isn't good, wouldn't recommend.

Indigestible submitted by markwells on June 20, 2023, 4:55pm This is one of those movies that leaves a taste in your mouth like you have when you think maybe you ate something you shouldn't have. Gets points for acting and that's about it. Grade D+.

Doesn't live up to the hype submitted by foilista on July 14, 2023, 10:07am This is a stylish and high-production thriller with an interesting premise... that doesn't have a whole lot under the surface. The most impressive part of it was its depiction of the music world. Yet it wasn't very well fleshed out - too grandiose without quite enough substance.

tarpit submitted by tarascon on July 19, 2023, 9:27pm This is that sort of film which reveals depths for those willing to peel back layers of allegory, dream, inaccurate memories, and power politics (sexism, racism, etc.) It’s also a tour through the swamp of an egotist’s psyche; the surface story of some scenes may largely be “Tar’s” self-protective interpretation of events. Or maybe not. Let the viewer decide.

The cinematic references to directors like Kubrick and Tartovsky, the subtle use of sound, and the moral ambiguity of every single character made this a film—if not easily enjoyable—an intriguing puzzler.

Tar. submitted by yufamily on August 10, 2023, 8:38am Kate Blanchett (Lydia) makes the narrative so real that you’d think it’s based on a true story but it’s not. Gender bias is real and her downfall is heart breaking. A conductor’s right hand controls the timing of a piece.
