"New York Times bestselling author Grady Hendrix takes on the haunted house in a hilarious and terrifying new novel that explores the way your past-and your family-can haunt you like nothing else.... Louise's parents have passed away, and she's returning to the small Southern town where she grew up to get their house ready to sell. It means she'll have to spend time with her younger brother-and their old grudges make that a terrifying prospect. But childhood hurts pale in comparison to the dangers posed by what still lives inside the house"-- Provided by publisher.

Entertaining submitted by Melissa Altese on June 16, 2023, 3:52pm Entertaining read but I felt it was written in hopes of being made into a movie.

An enjoyable horror/drama with black comedy elements submitted by eilusk on June 18, 2023, 2:49pm In comparison to Hendrix's other books: This one has a much more limited, focused scope (the troubles of one particular family), which I prefer; his "big picture" books like Final Girl Support Group haven't landed with me. I would consider this a mid-tier Hendrix book, though, not as good as My Best Friend's Exorcism for example.

I especially liked the parts of this novel that dig into the siblings' relationships with each other, their parents, and their past. Even with the horror stuff, the way the sister doesn't remember so much of the weird stuff and/or doesn't acknowledge how weird it is feels like a realistic exploration of how people think of their own childhoods as normal. There's a lot of great scenes where you can feel the sister and brother both thinking they're being so reasonable and the other one is a big asshole.

I would respectfully disagree with the other review on this book. I personally feel that Hendrix's prose always feels a little "movie-ish" - there's a lot of scenes and characters that feel very visual and cinematic - but he takes advantage of the novel format. For example, the sister's unreliable narration in the sections from her POV would be hard to fully communicate in a movie.

Creepy submitted by mwalny on July 4, 2023, 3:29pm I love this book. I enjoyed every, single minute I spent here. The way everything unravels both slowly (methodically) at first and then fast & fiercely toward the end is genius
