"When he graduated from Harvard Medical School, Jim O'Connell was asked by the medical school Dean to spend one year setting up a program to care for the homeless population in Boston. It became Jim O'Connell's life calling, to help people known as "rough sleepers." For the past three decades, Dr. O'Connell has run the Boston Healthcare for the Homeless Program, which he helped to create. Affiliated with Massachusetts General Hospital, the program includes clinics and a van on which Dr O'Connell and his staff ride through the Boston streets at night, offering outreach of medical care, socks, soup, and friendship to a marginalized community"-- Provided by publisher.

COMMUNITY REVIEWS
A reminder of what it means to care for your fellow human submitted by JJM.Deucher on June 18, 2023, 1:55pm An interesting story told in a compelling manner. Appreciated the honesty of Dr.Jim and the road that led him to do the work of the street team. Characters, doctors and patients, spanned the range of comedic to heart jerking. A good read, especially for anyone grappling with what it means to live in community with unhoused individuals.
Tracy Kidder submitted by cdeucher on June 26, 2023, 11:32am Tracey Kidder is an amazing writer. I was first made aware of this book from and article in the NYTimes about Dr. Jim so I ordered it up from our library. Planning to just spend one year at this clinic between his studies, it ended up becoming his life's calling. This is the story of medicine and care done right, emphasizing the importance of listening attentively to and spending time with homeless people. You will be moved and perhaps changed by reading this book. The problem of unhoused folks is real and we need to find a way to respond to them with dignity and grace.
