The journey begins -- To the west -- In the fortress town -- Attack -- The land of the god-folk -- Thea -- Afterword / Hayao Miyazaki -- Note from the translator / Alex Dudok de Wit.
"Shuna, the prince of a poor land, watches in despair as his people work themselves to death harvesting the little grain that grows there. And so, when a traveler presents him with a sample of seeds from a mysterious western land, he sets out to find the source of the golden grain, dreaming of a better life for his subjects. It is not long before he meets a proud girl named Thea. After freeing her from captivity, he is pursued by her enemies, and while Thea escapes north, Shuna continues toward the west, finally reaching the Land of the God-Folk. Will Shuna ever see Thea again? And will he make it back home from his quest for the golden grain?"-- Provided by publisher.

COMMUNITY REVIEWS

Beautiful but disjointed submitted by camelsamba on July 24, 2023, 10:39pm This is a retelling of a Tibetan folk tale. Not surprisingly, the artwork is gorgeous. The story, though, is a bit disjointed at times. Is that due to poor translation, or are those gaps found in the original as well? The translator's note at the end gave me more insight into the story (for example, how it was changed from the folk tale and possible implication of those changes) and to be honest that raised my rating from a 3 to a 4.
