Beautiful and unusual submitted by mariekakaye on August 14, 2018, 2:45pm In searching for stories that have mermaids of color, I came across this book. It's extremely hard to find an African/African-American mermaid, and this book was a rare find, and absolutely gorgeous and fascinating. Using an old folk tale from the Carolinas, the plot was very different than any mermaid story I've ever encountered. Because it is an old story, some of the ideas are a bit dated (using kids for manual labor, men coming to court a young woman because she has a large dowry), it also emphasizes perseverance, determination, and strength when faced with adversity. My mermaid-obsessed daughter loved it, and I enjoyed reading it to her.
