A Gift-Giving Tale submitted by Meginator on June 27, 2023, 10:59am This is a surprisingly straightforward and sweet story from Jory John, whose books are usually a little more bonkers than this tale about giving meaningful gifts. The plot is fairly predictable, with a nice moral message at its core, but the first-person narration, unusual in picture books like this, gives the book a distinctive voice and keeps everything moving along at a good pace. The character design is excellent and all of the beans are incredibly expressive, which adds some additional layers of humor to the occasionally slightly sarcastic text. The first-person format makes this a good choice to read aloud, and emerging readers will find some useful assistance from the different fonts used to convey changing tones. I might have liked this a little more without having read John’s other books, which definitely altered my expectations for this one, but it’s perfectly fine as a little morality play and has enough unique character to it to be memorable.
