Why normal is a myth (and why that matters) -- Our Interconnected nature -- The distortion of human development -- Rethinking abnormal: afflictions as adaptations -- The toxicities of our culture -- Pathways to wholeness.
"In this revolutionary book, renowned physician Gabor Maté eloquently dissects how in Western countries that pride themselves on their healthcare systems, chronic illness and general ill health are on the rise. Nearly 70 percent of Americans are on at least one prescription drug; more than half take two. In Canada, every fifth person has high blood pressure. In Europe, hypertension is diagnosed in more than 30 percent of the population. And everywhere, adolescent mental illness is on the rise. So what is really "normal" when it comes to health?"-- Provided by publisher.

Requires reading stamina submitted by alotofaxolotl on July 3, 2023, 7:42pm I was excited about this book but it overwhelmed me a bit and I didn't finish it. One could skim and get a cliff notes version of the ideas of this book without reading it in detail. The ideas definitely could have been summarized more succinctly along with the supportive research. It feels a bit like having a glass of wine with a well-educated, erudite friend but maybe the bar is closing soon or you just get tired of nodding your head over and over. So, if you're low on time or focus or energy, you may or may not have the stamina to persist with this one to the very end.
