Great Book with Relevance Today submitted by apf1950 on March 7, 2023, 3:29pm The publisher's description is too brief. Hochschild details the repression, vigilantism, and censorship during 1917-1921. He connects these patterns to anti-immigrant, antisemitic, and similar views, not to mention the hyper-patriotism of the era. These events were aided by Woodrow Wilson's preoccupation with international events, his promotion of the League of Nations, getting snookered by Britain and France, and then his debilitating stroke. The book is very well-written and is a good companion to Dan Okrent's THE GUARDED GATE.
