"Every great city has a soul. A human avatar that embodies their city's heart and wields its magic. New York? She's got six. But all is not well in the city that never sleeps. Though Brooklyn, Manny, Bronca, Venezia, Padmini, and Neek have temporarily managed to stop the Woman in White from invading--and destroying the entire universe in the process--the mysterious capital "E" Enemy has more subtle powers at her disposal. A new candidate for mayor wielding the populist rhetoric of gentrification, xenophobia, and "law and order" may have what it takes to change the very nature of New York itself and take it down from the inside. In order to defeat him, and the Enemy who holds his purse strings, the avatars will have to join together with the other Great Cities of the world in order to bring her down for good and protect their world from complete destruction"-- Provided by publisher.

Excellent second act submitted by tcramer318 on March 13, 2023, 11:14am I'm disappointed that we don't get to have a whole Great Cities Trilogy (to my knowledge as of time of posting this comment) but I really liked how the story was continued in this book. It definitely felt more like building on a foundation than tying up loose ends.

A satisfying culmination submitted by khrobinson on July 5, 2023, 7:33am The sequel to The City We Became built on the excellent start of the first book, added new twists and turns, and resolved lots of important details. Recommend both books!

Loved the first, glad this wrapped up the storyline (but didn't love it) submitted by Susan4Pax -prev. sueij- on August 27, 2023, 10:16pm 3/5 stars. I usually love Jemisin’s books, but had to make myself pick this one up.

Here are the things I did love. The characters of NYC and the boroughs are each so different that Jemisin really got to play with not only different personalities in her main characters, but also different interests and specialties. That was fun. I really loved the moments when we encountered other cities. Those were probably my favorite parts of the whole book. The final showdown (c’mon, that’s not a spoiler… you knew there’d be one) is clever, and I enjoyed the framework and resolution of it.

However, most of the book felt like what usually happens in the second book of trilogies… things are more about continuing what’s already been established and setting up for something later. There’s not as much “there” there. Nothing new has changed, time passes, and that was the bulk of this story. (To be clear, this is now a duology and this is the final book. I’m saying it had middle-book energy.) Also, there are important questions left unanswered (like what Manny's family already knows...).

I just re-read my review of the first book, and I gave that one 5 stars and apparently couldn’t put it down. This one, I had to make myself pick up. In the Acknowledgments, Jemisin says that with the pandemic and world as it was as she was working, she had to force herself to write this one. I think that energy came through for me. I’m glad she gave us closure for the story, and sad life didn’t allow for the original trilogy as she envisioned it. I especially would have loved to see more of other cities’ incarnations.
