An Alternate Perspective submitted by Meginator on June 24, 2023, 9:49pm This picture book tells the story of the first Thanksgiving from a Wampanoag perspective and also provides a few educational notes with additional context about the historical and modern Wampanoag people. The framing device, which involves a grandmother telling the story to her grandchildren, emphasizes the fact that the Wampanoag people still live in their ancestral lands today and helps to educate readers about storytelling traditions as well as presenting the story itself. The story emphasizes the importance of understanding and working with nature and presents an important perspective on colonization that, as the characters themselves note, isn’t always taught in US schools. The illustrations have nice earthy tones to them that fit nicely with the story’s core themes, and the book is a great alternative to the typical Thanksgiving narrative, one that centers First Peoples and celebrates their traditions and mythology.
