Sad Comedy submitted by jibkidder on July 25, 2022, 11:18am I haven't seen any of Trier's previous work except the disappointing "Thelma", but as I understand it, when making Thelma, Eskil Vogt, his long time close friend and cinematographer tried to get him in on making "The Innocents" and Trier was disinterested. So Vogt went on to make that film on his own, which is great, and they made "Thelma" together, which was boring. But I think Trier is just maybe not cut out for a science fiction film. Here, the two are in their collaborative element and the results are a compelling and sad romantic comedy.

overhyped and lacks insight submitted by pmheard on June 9, 2023, 11:17am a self proclaimed social deviant and manic pixie dream girl complains about the structures of society, despite having an extraordinarily mundane life.

perhaps i’ve had too many close encounters with people who carry this same sense of grandiose, but this film rubbed me the wrong way. it too strongly romanticizes the act of doing wrong yourself and others because of unresolved internal issues, and guises that behind a theme of self-discovery. i don’t find anything about that cute, quirky, relatable, or revelatory. at some point in life one must mature, step-back, and observe oneself for face value, which is something that can be achieved without emotional dissonance.

i understand the type of nuance the worst person in the world was attempting to reach but it simply wasn’t there for me. the crisis, the indecision, the conflict, i get it all, but the full message failed to reveal itself. there was no elaboration of relationships or background, no profound exploration of the psyche, and no intentional guidance behind any of the life-altering decisions made. instead the plot was shallow, empty, and superficial, which is quite disappointing because there was clearly potential for a larger, more impactful claim. this was truly non-dynamic and stagnant.

there were redeemable traits to this film though. the direction, acting, cinematography, and soundtrack were all fantastic, but ultimately it failed to save the overall premise and i’m severely dissatisfied given the hype.
