"Legendary storyteller Stephen King goes into the deepest well of his imagination in this spellbinding novel about a seventeen-year-old boy who inherits the keys to a parallel world where good and evil are at war, and the stakes could not be higher--for that world or ours." -- from the publisher

Ok, not great submitted by Emily Jennings on June 12, 2023, 7:56pm While I generally enjoy King’s work, I have mixed feelings about this one. It was worth finishing and some of the imagery definitely stayed with me. Charlie’s voice didn’t seem authentic to me - a kid his age in the early 2010s wouldn’t have used some of the words he somehow knows and consistently employs. It sounds more like King himself using colloquialisms he may have grown up with. (There’s a brief semi-explanation for this near the end, but I didn’t buy it. ) However, Charlie’s relationships with Mr. Bowditch and Radar are touching and maybe the best part of the story. I found the other-worldly part of the book to be somewhat chaotic and less compelling.

Three Acts submitted by vclinton on July 18, 2023, 3:09pm It's kind of like reading three totally different books in one book. The third Act kind of goes a little haywire. Yet, I still enjoyed it overall I think - lol :D

Couldn’t get into it submitted by yasioasasi on August 5, 2023, 5:17pm I read the first 15% before giving up; it just didn’t seem believable. What kind of high schooler looks at a leaking roof and thinks structural damage?

Nice fantasy work for those wary of horror submitted by srai700 on August 13, 2023, 7:41am This is actually my first Stephen King novel! Since he's known largely as a horror writer, I was expecting this to be scary, but was pleasantly surprised to find that this is heavier on the fantasy. Straightforward prose, and an interesting fantasy world with some references to classics of the fantasy/horror genre. Protagonist might seem to act older than his age, but it felt believable to me because of the backstory. All in all a solid read, and prompted me to check out King's other works!
