In this beautiful story of adventure and survival from the New York Times bestselling author of Room, three men vow to leave the world behind them as they set out in a small boat for an island their leader has seen in a dream, with only faith to guide them. In seventh-century Ireland, a scholar and priest called Artt has a dream telling him to leave the sinful world behind. Taking two monks--young Trian and old Cormac--he rows down the river Shannon in search of an isolated spot on which to found a monastery. Drifting out into the Atlantic, the three men find an impossibly steep, bare island inhabited by tens of thousands of birds, and claim it for God. In such a place, what will survival mean?

Great story submitted by SusanS on June 14, 2023, 11:06pm In this novel, a monk called Artt has a dream that he should travel to an uninhabited island to start a new monastery. He brings along two other monks who are willing to follow him - an older man who has practical knowledge that will be helpful, and a younger man who is eager to please (and also very tuned into the natural world, including the birds, fish and plants they find on the island). They bring almost nothing with them so they're quickly faced with the struggle to survive in a hostile environment while at the same time trying to serve God. And the tension between Artt's goals and what the other two men believe is possible creates increasing tension. This is a great story and is beautifully written.
