An All-Timer; Absolutely Unforgettable submitted by Meginator on June 19, 2023, 11:41pm For my money, this album preserves one of the top jazz performances of all time, with each member of the the Dave Brubeck trio (Dave Brubeck on piano, Eugene Wright on bass, and Joe Morello on drums) completely in sync with the others as the music flows effortlessly from their hands. Although the piano takes on the melodic responsibilities, Brubeck leaves ample room for the rhythm section to take center stage, and both musicians rise to the occasion. Joe Morello demonstrates how the drums, when played thoughtfully, can do far more than set and keep the rhythm and tempo; his drumming is often as interesting (or more) than the melodic lines and the trio’s version of “Swanee River” almost plays out like a drum feature due to Morello’s complete command of the kit. I cannot recommend this highly enough to anyone who likes good music, and especially anyone who appreciates excellent drum work. It is absolutely incredible.
